“Imagine a rotating football field,” suggests Bob Loyd, the chief operating manager and Plant Manager at Clipper Windpower here in Cedar Rapids. “That gives you an idea of the size of these things.”

Huge is the word that comes to mind. Huge, not only in the size of the machines being built right here in “River City,” but also in the potential size of this new Iowa industry, which could run into billions and billions of dollars. Iowa could  become the USA's wind power production center for a number of reasons. And small business plays an important part.

Achieving SCORE's Highest Possible Honor

This is about a guy who deserves kudos from every one of us in business. He is one of those rare people who have served above and beyond the call of duty.  Cal joined SCORE in 1980—several years before personal computers and long before the Internet.  That’s when he retired from his already successful career at Collins Radio which began in 1946.  He’s been  in SCORE 27 years.  Since joining SCORE, we estimate he has helped hundreds of local businesses to begin or prosper.  But it doesn’t stop there.  Cal was Chairman of the local SCORE operation for three of these years, he served as the District Manager for several years and led the charge as Chairman of the Membership and Training Committee for six additional years.  Always there, always helping, ever reliable.  For this he was awarded SCORE’s Highest National Honor – The Platinum Award for Meritorious Service in January, 2008.  Congratulations, and an appreciative nod from all of us Cal!
