Committee Updates

Fundraising Committee

The fundraising committee under Jerry Moore’s leadership is working to secure the funding required to accomplish our mission.

Recently, we have applied to The Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation for 5 different corporate grants.  John Bryant was the chief engineer of this terrific accomplishment.

We have started contacting the key companies we want to call on in December. Many of the companies' headquarters are not located in Cedar Rapids.

Seminar Committee

The Cedar Rapids Chapter of Score will again offer our business seminar “ How to Really Start Your Own Business.”  Prospective business owners are informed about:

legal structure options sources of capital
basic business records business taxes
regulations permits
business insurance marketing and advertising

The seminar is co-sponsored by Kirkwood and begins on November 13.  The three class sessions meet on Tuesdays at 6:30 P.M. to 9:30 P.M. at the Kirkwood Training & Outreach Services building. Cost is $59.00.  To register call  319-398-1022 or 1-800-332-8833, or v
isit the website to register or to obtain more information.

Training Committee

In September the Training Committee focused on improving the definition and documentation of counseling activities in the SCORE office.  The "desk duty log" was instituted and is now being used to characterize office activities.

In October, the committee concentrated on refining and defining the mentoring process. Focus elements were mentor qualifications, training checklists and records, communications to mentors and to new members and monitoring of the process.

Speaker Committee

Jerry Moore spoke at the X Club on Tuesday the 23rd of October.

Our  new laptop and video projector arrived in October.  Speakers will be familiarized with this equipment in early November.  Any SCORE member who is interested in learning about Power Point should contact Steve West.

Jean Kruse is speaking to the Junior League Sustainers group on the 16th of November at Cedar Rapids Country Club.   She will be the first SCORE speaker to use our new equipment and PowerPoint presentation.

We will be speaking to the Rotary West group in late November.

We want more speakers!  Any SCORE member who is interested in becoming a speaker for the chapter should contact Steve West.  So far we have:

Steve West * Jim Thomson * John Ruth * Jerry Moore * Jean Kruse

To arrange for a speaker presentation for your organization, contact Steve West.

Marketing Committee

The SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise) organization at Mt Mercy College made a group of strategic recommendations to the Marketing Committee on the 29th of October.  This presentation was part of the project and partnership between SCORE and SIFE.   Details will be published to the Cedar Rapids SCORE membership in the next several months.

The first ad in the Partnership with Charity will appear in the Cedar Rapids Gazette in the next week.  Junge Motors was the sponsoring organization.  They will be listed as a financial partner of SCORE Cedar Rapids on our website.

Plans are going forward for the “Open for business”  trade show in which SCORE will have an exhibit.  The exhibit will include our new LCD projector showing videos of small business successes and our chapter website.

Our targeted marketing approach is being developed.  The key is good lists of e mail addresses that represent our several publics.
